"It's a nice day for a green wedding."
-Billy Idol (paraphrased)
Please, help us make this a green wedding!
We are both expanding our family with nieces and young cousins. The most important gift we can give these children, the future children our family, and children everywhere is a healthy, vibrant planet.
It is difficult to plan a wedding with no waste, but we are trying to take steps to reduce the economic impact of our special day on our planet. We are limiting paper and using this website as the main source of information for guests. We found a fabulous letterpress in Syracuse, NY, (http://www.bellafigura.com) that is committed to the environment, and our invitations were sent on ecologically low-impact bamboo paper. As we strive to plan an eco-friendly celebration, we ask you to help in this endeavor.
Here is how you can help us make this a green wedding:
- DO: Plant a tree in a national forest. For only $1 per tree, the national forest service will plant a tree in a national forest. We will be planting at least one tree for each invitation we send out to help make our event carbon neutral. Please join us by making a donation to plant a tree here: http://www.americanforests.org/planttrees/
- DON’T: Don’t wrap any gifts you ship to us. Since we live far from most of our guests and the wedding location, we know that some gifts may be shipped to us. The cardboard, peanuts and plastic bubbles will provide enough wrapping (and toys for our cats). Instead of paying $5 for gift wrap, please consider planting five trees in a national forest instead.
- DO: Carpool. We are inviting a number of people from Baltimore, Boston, and Washington, DC. By sharing rides, you can spend time with friends or family members, make new friends, protect the planet and save gas and toll money. Please let us know if you are willing to drive another guest in your car or if you would like us to help you find a ride.
- DON’T: Don’t Rent a car. There is no need to rent a car if you are staying at the Roslyn Claremont. The Roslyn Claremont Hotel is walking distance to historic downtown Roslyn which has restaurants, shopping, bars, a movie theater, a duck pond, and the library where Dania spent many hours researching chaos theory, fractals and African termites (don’t ask). We will provide transportation from the Roslyn Claremont to and from the wedding.
- DO: Fly Virgin America. If you live in Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Los Vegas, or Baltimore/Washington areas and are planning on flying to New York, consider flying on Virgin America (http://virginamerica.com). The Virgin Group has a proven history of investing in environmentally sound practices, and Virgin America donates a percentage of all profits to environmental causes, has partnered with carbonfund.org to allows passengers to buy carbon offsets when booking a flight, (see information at carbonfund.org,) and has donated significant amounts of money to the California State Parks Foundation for environmental restoration projects across Northern California.
